Video interviews on Open Educational Practices

Gráinne Conole of the Open University UK has conducted a series of interviews with colleagues from the academic community to collect their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges presented by Open Educational Resources (OER) and moves to define and promote Open Educational Practices (OEP). The videos are available to view and comment on.

At the EFQUEL Innovation Forum held 8-10 September 2010 in Oieras, Portugal, Gráinne Conole interviewed eight colleagues from the academic community to collect their thoughts and input on the following four questions:

  1. What opportunities do OER offer for education from your perspective?
  2. What do you think are the key challenges to achieving this vision?
  3. We have identified four dimensions of OEP practice that are important – do these capture the different aspects of OER practice? Strategies and Policies, Barriers and Success Factors, Tools and Tool Practice, Staff Development and Support. Is there anything else we should include?
  4. What kinds of guidelines derived from these dimensions of OEP would be useful for those involved in creating, using and management OER?

These videos are available for viewing through the Open University’s Cloudworks and range in length up to about twelve minutes.

You are invited to view the videos and to comment, and offer your thoughts on the questions.

Consultation on Open Educational Resources

Dear colleagues,

We invite you to participate in an exciting consultation process about open educational resources (OERs).

The OPAL project is an international network to promote innovation and better quality in education and training through the use of open educational resources.

We have collected 58 case studies of OER initiatives and from these abstracted a set of associated open educational practices (OEPs). Open educational practices are defined as the set of activities and support around the creation, use and repurposing of open educational resources. We have identified eight OEP dimensions:

•    Strategies and policies
•    Quality Assurance (QA) models
•    Partnership models
•    Tools and tool practices
•    Innovations
•    Skills development and support
•    Business models/ sustainability strategies
•    Barriers and success factors

We would like to invite you to become involved in an online consultation around this work. In particular, we are seeking views from the community about the dimensions we have derived and also the OER case studies. An online space has been set up to facilitate this consultation process.

Please do also circulate this more widely via your professional networks.
