UNESCO

UNESCO’s mandate is to promote the free flow of ideas and knowledge. Its strategy is based on “knowledge” in the Information Society: information access, training and ethical issues; and “infostructure”: policies, networking and applications focussing on developing and transitional countries. Content in the Information Society:

  • ethical issues: access, privacy, legal and societal aspects of information;
  • access to contents through public domain, including “freeware”;
  • promoting cultural and linguistic pluralism;
  • training: information professionals, computer specialists, user communities and governments;
  • participation in the global cyberculture, in particular, of youth needs;

Infostructure development:

  • national information policies;
  • people and institutions networking;
  • innovative, application oriented pilot projects: virtual learning communities, laboratories, libraries, online
