The University of Duisburg-Essen, the coordinator of the project, (http://www.uni-due.de) has 40,000 enrolled students and with 3,400 staff is one of the largest universities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and an important employer in the region. The broad spectrum covered by teaching and research at UDE stretches from humanities, social sciences and economic sciences to engineering and science departments and a large medical school. The Department Information Systems for Production and Operations Management hosts an interdisciplinary research team and covers all aspects of e-learning, from application-orientated information systems to competence development research. The department hosts a successfull international e-learning research unit, headed by Ulf Ehlers. Within the scope of its activities the focus lies on quality management, competence research, Web 2.0 for learning knowledge management, as well through empirical and analytical research as through practical application.
